The Dodd-Frank Wall St. Reform and Consumer Protection Act became law on July 21, 2010. The White House formed a committee named the FSOC (Federal Stability Oversight Committee) to OVERSEE Wall St. and their layers of financial holding companies. To date NO one has been held accountabl-e and ironically-, Elizabeth Warren who was to be the head of the FSOC was asked to leave and replaced by Senator Ted Kaufman. The Dodd-Frank Act was formed to break up the 6 major financial institutio-ns in our country. This OVERSIGHT committee was formed to: Stop TO BiG TO FAIL and to stop a Moral Hazard.
In re the segment from last Sunday on the trucking industry;
The radix malorum of all things, trucking and each and every other issue under the sun, is money in politics. Public financing of elections, a statutorily capped six week campaign with allotments of air time & print space, is the only way to correct the entire ball of wax. Along with Bernie Sanders amendment to correct Citizen's United. Then we get our country back and can work on every issue there is.
As for trucking, the crux of that particular matter is deregulation, which killed off trucking. At first deregulation may well have broken the stranglehold of Vito Corleone on the trucking business, but in all, trucking is entirely broken because of deregulation. In short, they tossed the baby out with the bath water.
The federal gov't and the safety establishment have tried to lasso trucking for decades, and their efforts since deregulation have been stymied by Big Business. The best medicine would be to borrow from Europe and hire drivers on an annual salary basis and get rid of being paid by the mile (or by a percentage method, which is just as bad). Right now we work insane, never-ending hours. A lot of that is because the business works off a pennies per mile margin. Another problem is competing forces, to-wit, the regulations establishment (enforcement & safety activity) versus profitability and business growth, with the actual driver caught as monkey-in-the-middle.
I'd love to talk to one of you guys off air on maybe a weekday and give a backgrounder. I'm no more a "trucker", per se, than the man in the moon. Yet there I am. I was headed to finish college and thence to law school, but let's say that life got in the way.
Oh, yeah; one of you got it right with the term "driver", with the other snapping "naw just call 'em truckers". Nope, driver is the correct jargon. You have to watch out for an Inside The Beltway- NoVa/D.C. mentality, which infects every last human being in southern Maryland, D.C. , and NoVa north of I-66 and east of I-81. Where else can a sitting governor and a wealthy team owner get backstopped over moving the Redskins to Arlington? Where else can a sitting governor and the Walt Disney Company get booted out of Haymarket? Where else can proposals to ungrade US 50 to the West Virginia line, and efforts to extend I-66 through West Virginia get slammed down? The NoVa mentality views itself as the center of the universe, with the balance of humanity seen as servile, annoying insects. I know that's not intentional, but every last soul up there exhibits it to some degree.
And contact OOIDA, as they have their own K Street types up there who will no doubt be glad to talk to you. Don't even think of the NoVa fallback mentality of expecting to see an unwashed mouth breather. I said they were K street types.
